IEC 60254.2:2000 pdf free download Lead-acid traction batteries – Part 2: Dimensions of cells and terminals and marking of polarity on cells
1.1Scope and object
This part of lEC 60254 is applicable to lead-acid traction batteries used as power sources forelectric propulsion.
The object of the present standard is to specify
the maximum external (overall) dimensions of traction battery cells,that is, the width,theheight and the length;
the form of the marking of traction battery cell polarity and dimensions of correspondingsymbols;
the basic dimensions of some commonly used traction battery terminals designed toconnect output cables to the battery;
the dimensions of cells commonly used in Asia and North America.
1.2Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which,through reference in this text,constitute provisions of this part of lEC 60254.For dated references,subsequent amendmentsto,or revisions of,any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreementsbased on this part of iEC 60254 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying themost recent editions of the normative documents indicated below.For undated references, thelatest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of lEC and lS0 maintainregisters of currently valid International Standards.

2Main dimensions of traction battery cells
2.1Standard series
Traction battery cells in accordance with this standard shall belong to one of the following twodimensional series determined by the width:
E(narrow)
L (wide)
2.2External dimensions
2.2.1 The external (overall) dimensions of traction battery cells are represented by thefollowing symbols:
bwidth (dimension parallel to the surface of the plates);
h height (including lid, vent plugs and terminals, but without output cable);llength (dimension perpendicular to the surface of the plates).
2.2.2 The dimensions of traction battery cells in accordance with this standard shall correspond to those of table 1.
2.3Cell range prevalent in Asia 1)
The dimensions of traction battery cells in this range are given in table 2.2.4Cell range prevalent in North America 2)
The dimensions of traction battery cells in this range are given in table 3. Width and length onlyare specified.
3Marking of polarity on traction battery cells and dimensions of
corresponding symbols
3.1General provisions for marking of cell polarity
To comply with this standard, traction battery cells shall carry the marking of polarity, at least ofthe positive terminal.
3.2 Form of marking
The marking shall take the form of the symbol +, indented or in relief, on the lid adjacent to thepositive terminal.
lf the negative terminal is also marked,the marking shall take the form of the symbol -,indented or in relief, on the lid adjacent to the negative terminal.
3.3Symbols used for marking and their dimensions
Symbols used for the marking of the polarity shall be in accordance with future lEC 60417-1.
