1 Scope
This British Standard specifies requirements for the materials, details of construction and performance for portable stagings and folding trestles.
NOTE Steel and splithead trestles are specified in BS 1139-4.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this British Standard, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1 cross-bearer
horizontal member connecting the stiles of a staging or trestle
NOTE On a trestle, the cross- bearers might or might not be intended as a means of access.
3.2 folding trestle
arrangement of two frames hinged together, designed for supporting a staging as a working platform
3.3 maximum total load
maximum weight that a staging or trestle is designed to support when set up in accordance with the user instructions
3.4 side protection
components forming a barrier to protect people from the risk of falling and to retain materials
3.5 spacing of cross-bearers
distance, measured along the longitudinal axis of the stiles, between the same relative positions of the Cross- bearers

3.6 staging
working platform constructed to provide a flat, horizontal working surface
5 Materials
Materials shall conform to the material requirements of BS EN 131-2. Stagings and trestles made from plastic materials shall conform to the requirements in BS EN 131-2. All metal components, with the exception of metal fastenings, shall be protected against corrosion by one of the methods given in BS EN ISO 14713-1. Metal fastenings shall be protected against corrosion by one of the methods given in BS 7371 (all parts). NOTE Under normal conditions, aluminium alloys are not considered to be susceptible to corrosion and might not need to be protected. Timber parts shall be smooth and coated on all sides. The coating shall be transparent and permeable to water vapour.
